molokov_au: Adelaide Discworld Fans

Hi all,

I'm just back from the Australian Discworld Convention - Nullus Anxietas 3 and a group of us Adelaideans over there thought it would be nice to start up a social group down here so we can get together regularly and have a chat, a drink, and a game of Thud or two.

If this sounds like something you're interested in, please sign up to our email mailing list at
https://groups.google.com/group/adelaide-discworld-fans and an email will go out shortly with information about our first meeting date & place (because we haven't decided it yet)

Potentially this social group might also lead on to having a smaller convention-lite Discworld event in Adelaide in 2012, but that will depend on volunteers for a committee, and will be entirely separate to the regular social group.

computer_boy: DOWNLOAD Tax?!

This is a reply to my question when I bought a downloadable game for $26.00 and saw a weird little tax on top for $2.60.

The helpful reply from the company:

Taxes are calculated for us by a company that specializes in this stuff, based on your billing address. Many countries charge tax for downloads but I don't know about Australia specifically.

A tax on intangible products?! What the fuck?!

It exists in the realm of ones and zeros, and it's still LEGAL to MAKE A TAX PROFIT from NOTHING?!

That's just fucking nuts. My country and likely most make a PROFIT on AIR.

No box, no disc, no manual, just RAW DATA.
(When you ALREADY fork over cash every month for an INTERNET PROVIDER.)

Wow.

pandemonium_x: Digital Cameras?

I'm trying to decide what to ask for for my birthday in June and I'm considering a digital camera.

Does anyone have any reccomendations? I'd like to get as really good quality as possible at a good price if possible.

Any help is appreciated.

shirosenshi: HD TeeVee.

I was wondering why I got replies to people not in this commuity, when I realised I posted it to my personal LJ. Ha!

Anyway. It's been a while.

So hopefully people still actively read the place, and can offer me some advice. I'm looking at investing in a new TV. Something hi-def, 1080, good for my new PS3 when I pay it off. An investment in the future!

But I don't know all that much about them, like the difference between LCD and plasma. What's better? What looks better? What lasts longer? Good models? Good brands? Good stores? Good places for advice?

Any takers?

Japan hit by Tsunami and 8.1 Level Earthquake Alert!

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Japan's meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning and told Pacific coast residents to flee to higher ground after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 hit near islands north of the country.

A tsunami about 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall or higher could hit the Pacific coast of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 9:10 p.m. (1210 GMT), the agency said.
